At MadisonDia, collecting your diamond is not a two-minute counter transaction. Every in-store handover follows the same fixed verification routine: we confirm who you are, you read the laser inscription on the girdle yourself, you match it against the IGI certificate, and you see the stone under UV light before anything is signed for. This page explains exactly what happens, step by step, so you know what to expect — and what to insist on, wherever you buy.

Why In-Store Diamond Verification Matters Before You Collect

Most buyers only ever see their diamond after it is set, polished and boxed. That is the moment when questions become awkward to ask. Our view is the opposite: the handover is the natural checkpoint. You have already learned about the 4Cs before purchase; now you confirm that the specific stone in front of you is the exact stone described on your certificate.

Nothing in the process is technical or intimidating. You do not need a gemmology background — our staff hand you the equipment and walk you through what you are looking at. The point is that you see it, not that we tell you about it.

Step 1: Greeting and the Private Rest Area

When you arrive, a member of staff greets you and takes you to our seated rest area rather than a service counter. Collections take time, and we would rather you were comfortable. Beverages are offered throughout the session — this is meant to feel like an appointment, not a queue.

Step 2: Confirming the Order Belongs to You

Before any package is opened, our staff confirm order ownership. You will be asked to verify:

• The shipping address or billing address on the order
• The contact phone number registered with the order

This protects you as much as it protects us. A finished diamond piece should never be released on a name alone, and we apply the same rule to every order regardless of value.

Step 3: Reading the Laser Inscription Under Magnification

Every certified stone carries a microscopic laser inscription on its girdle — the thin outer edge of the diamond. It records the report number, and on lab-grown stones it also states that the diamond is laboratory-grown. It is invisible to the naked eye and needs magnification to read.

Our staff set up the magnifier or the viewing scope, focus on the girdle, and then hand it over to you. This part is not a demonstration. You look through the eyepiece yourself, read the inscription number, and compare it character by character with the number printed on your IGI certificate.

Step 4: UV Light Test for Fluorescence and Phosphorescence

We keep a UV lamp in store so you can see how your diamond behaves under ultraviolet light. Two things can happen, and both are normal:

Seeing this in person removes a lot of anxiety later. Customers who first notice a faint glow at home under a nightclub light or a UV nail lamp often worry something is wrong. If you have already seen it on our bench, you know exactly what it is.

Step 5: Jewellery Care Briefing Before You Leave

Once the verification is finished, our staff go through how to look after the piece. In plain language, that means:

1. Take it off first. Remove rings before cleaning, gardening, gym sessions and swimming. Chlorine and hard knocks damage the metal setting long before they trouble the diamond.
2. Clean it gently. Warm water, a drop of mild dish soap, a soft toothbrush on the underside of the stone where oils collect, then rinse and pat dry.
3. Skip the chemicals. Bleach, chlorine and abrasive pastes attack gold alloys and can loosen prongs.
4. Store pieces separately. A diamond scratches every other gemstone — and every other diamond — in the same pouch.
5. Have the prongs checked. Once a year is sensible for a ring worn daily. MadisonDia includes one year of complimentary repair on finished jewellery.
