How the Score is Calculated

The score is based on the diamond's proportions, including table percentage, depth percentage, crown angle, and pavilion angle, as well as cut quality factors like polish and symmetry. Ideal proportions allow light to travel efficiently within the diamond, maximizing brilliance and fire. The non-linear scoring penalizes small deviations lightly but applies stronger deductions for extreme deviations, reflecting the true impact on sparkle. Girdle thickness is also considered; thin to medium girdles are ideal, while thick girdles may reduce light return. Additionally, the score incorporates a fire leakage calculation, which estimates the percentage of light lost without contributing to visible brilliance. A lower fire leakage score indicates better light performance.

Score Meaning
93–100 Exceptional: Top-tier sparkle and fire, ideal for premium buyers.
85–92 Outstanding: Excellent performance, virtually indistinguishable from the highest-quality stones to the naked eye.
70–84 Good: Solid sparkle and fire, providing good aesthetic and value; suitable for budget-conscious buyers.
55–69 Fair: Noticeable compromises in light return; careful consideration advised.
<55 Poor: Limited brilliance and fire; not recommended for investment or everyday wear.

Why the Score Matters

The MadisonDia Ideal Sparkle Index™ simplifies diamond evaluation by combining cut, proportions, polish, symmetry, and girdle quality into a single, easy-to-understand score. By using non-linear scaling, the system emphasizes the differences between near-perfect and good-quality diamonds, making the subtle effects of cut more visible to buyers. While the score provides valuable guidance, it is intended as a supplementary tool. Buyers should always verify diamond quality with official GIA or IGI certificates to ensure accuracy before purchase.

FAQ – MadisonDia Ideal Sparkle Index™

What is the MadisonDia Ideal Sparkle Index™?

It is a proprietary scoring system that measures diamond brightness, fire, and overall sparkle. Complex gemological data is simplified into an easy-to-understand score, helping buyers make informed choices.

How does this calculator work?

Enter the diamond’s table %, depth %, crown angle, pavilion angle, polish, symmetry, and girdle. The tool estimates the light reflection performance, combining brilliance and fire leakage into an overall score.

What is “Fire Leakage”?

Fire leakage refers to light escaping the diamond without reflecting back to the viewer, reducing brightness and fire. The tool shows it as a percentage. For example, “5% leakage” means 5% of fire is lost compared to ideal proportions.

Is this score the same as GIA or IGI certification?

No. The MadisonDia Ideal Sparkle Index™ is an independent simplified model. GIA and IGI provide official reports. This tool helps translate proportions into observable brightness and fire but should be used alongside official certification.

What score is considered “good”?

Above 90 indicates extremely high brightness and minimal fire leakage. 80–89 is still excellent. Below 70 may have noticeable optical shortcomings.

Can I rely solely on this tool when buying a diamond?

No. Use it as a reference only. Always check GIA or IGI certificates. The tool simplifies screening, not replacing professional grading.

Is this tool only for lab-grown diamonds?

Although MadisonDia focuses on lab-grown diamonds, the tool works for natural diamonds as optical principles are the same.

Why is MadisonDia the first brand in Hong Kong to provide this tool?

We created this tool to bridge the gap between gemology and consumer understanding. MadisonDia is the first in Hong Kong to offer a transparent, optical-performance-based evaluation system, giving consumers confidence when selecting diamonds.
