Memorial Diamonds from Ashes & Hair — for Loved Ones and Pets

The carbon that once gave life to someone you love — human or pet — carefully extracted, purified, and crystallised into a real, IGI-certified diamond. To be worn, held, and passed down through generations.

The Science

Carbon — the building block of all life.

Every living being — human or animal — is built on carbon. Bone ashes contain approximately 3–9% carbon; hair contains 45–50% carbon. This carbon — the literal substance of a life once lived — is the raw material from which your memorial diamond is grown.

Diamonds are the purest crystalline form of carbon. By isolating and purifying the carbon from these remains and crystallising it into a diamond lattice, we are not creating something artificial. We are revealing the most perfect form that carbon can take.

How It Works

Three stages, seventeen meticulous steps.

Our Chemical Vapor Deposition process builds your diamond one atomic layer at a time — in a clean vacuum environment, without metal catalysts.

"Before a diamond can be grown, the carbon held within the ashes or hair must be carefully isolated and purified."

1.1

Labelling & Tracking

Each sample is assigned a unique identification code at the moment it arrives. That code follows the material through every subsequent step, allowing full traceability from ashes to finished diamond.

1.2

Grinding

The ashes are milled to a fine, uniform consistency. This greatly increases the reactive surface area, which is essential for thorough chemical purification.

1.3

Chemical Purification

Calcium phosphate and other mineral compounds present in bone ash are removed through a controlled chemical process, isolating the pure carbon from everything that is not carbon.

1.4

High-Temperature Treatment

The purified carbon is heat-treated in an oxygen-free environment. This prevents oxidation, which would burn the carbon away, and ensures maximum purity going into the growth phase.

1.5

Vaporisation

Finally, the purified carbon is converted into a gaseous form — the feedstock that will be introduced into the CVD reactor in Stage 2.

"The heart of the process — where the carbon is transformed, atom by atom, into a real diamond crystal."

2.1

Seed Preparation

A high-purity diamond seed crystal is placed inside a sealed vacuum chamber. This tiny seed acts as the template onto which the purified carbon will be built.

2.2

Carbon Gas Introduction

A precisely controlled mixture of carbon-rich gases, derived from the purified source, is introduced into the chamber at low pressure.

2.3

Plasma Activation

High-energy microwave plasma is generated inside the chamber. The plasma breaks down the gas molecules and releases free carbon atoms ready to crystallise.

2.4

Layer-by-Layer Growth

The released carbon atoms settle onto the seed crystal and arrange themselves into a perfect crystalline lattice — one atom-thick layer at a time. The same atomic structure as a mined diamond.

2.5

Controlled Duration

Growth continues for several weeks to several months. The exact duration depends on the target carat weight, colour, and other specifications of your stone.

2.6

Post-Growth Treatment

The chamber is gradually cooled and the raw diamond is carefully removed. At this stage the rough stone may show a brownish tint — normal for newly grown CVD diamonds, addressed during cutting.

"A rough diamond is not yet a gemstone. The final stage is the work of master craftsmen."

3.1

Marking

Expert craftsmen study the rough stone's internal structure and identify the optimal cutting planes — the orientation that will produce the best combination of size, clarity, and brilliance.

3.2

Scanning

High-precision 3D scanning maps the stone's internal composition in detail, including any natural inclusions that need to be avoided or worked around.

3.3

Design

A cutting plan is finalised, balancing weight retention, optical performance, and your preferences for shape and finish.

3.4

Laser Cut

High-energy laser technology executes the cutting plan with micron-level precision and without introducing stress fractures into the stone.

3.5

Hand Polish

After preliminary shaping, the diamond is hand-polished by master craftsmen. This is where the stone develops its final brilliance and fire.

3.6

Quality Control & IGI Certification

The finished diamond is graded against the international 4Cs — Colour, Clarity, Cut, and Carat Weight — and submitted to IGI for independent certification before delivery.

What you provide

Carbon source

For a 1ct diamond
60 g
Cremated ashes — approximately half a cup. Bone ash is 3–9% carbon, so this quantity yields enough pure carbon for a 1ct stone. Larger sizes require proportionally more.
1 g
Hair — far less is needed because hair is 45–50% carbon. Ideal when cremation is not available, or to preserve the ashes intact. Suitable for both human and pet hair.
What you receive

Your finished piece

Delivered to you
A certified, finished memorial diamond — chemically and optically identical to a mined diamond, in your chosen carat weight.
A full IGI certificate detailing the 4Cs, plus a unique traceability code linking the stone to the original sample.
Optional setting into a finished jewellery piece — ring, pendant, or necklace — with bespoke design consultation.
C
Colour

Graded on the colourless-to-tinted scale. CVD diamonds available across a range of natural colours.

C
Clarity

Assessed under magnification. CVD's clean growth produces naturally fewer inclusions than HPHT.

C
Cut

Shaped and hand-polished by master craftsmen. The cut determines how light returns to the eye.

C
Carat

From 0.5 to 3.0 carats. Choose the weight that feels right for your tribute.

Independent Certification

Every diamond, independently verified.

Every memorial diamond we create is submitted to the International Gemological Institute (IGI) for independent grading and certification. You receive both the diamond and the report — the same gold standard used across the global diamond trade.

  • Independent grading by IGI's accredited gemologists, the same body trusted by the global diamond trade.
  • Each report documents the 4Cs — Colour, Clarity, Cut, and Carat Weight — measured to laboratory standard.
  • IGI verification confirms that your stone is a real diamond, chemically and optically identical to mined diamonds.
  • A unique IGI report number is paired with our internal traceability code, linking your finished stone to the original sample.

Frequently asked questions.

Yes. MadisonDia creates memorial diamonds from both human and pet remains. The science, the process, and the standard of care are identical. Whether you are honouring a parent, a partner, a child, or a beloved pet, your stone will be grown to the same exacting laboratory standard and independently certified by IGI.
Yes — completely. A memorial diamond is chemically, physically, and optically identical to a mined diamond. It is graded under the same 4Cs framework, independently certified by IGI, and accompanied by a quality report. The only difference is where the carbon came from.
We offer seven standard carat weights: 0.5, 0.7, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5, and 3.0 carats. Larger stones require additional growth time and a proportionally larger quantity of carbon source. Speak with our team if you would like guidance on choosing a size that's right for you.
For a 1ct diamond, we require approximately 60 grams of cremated ashes (about half a cup) or approximately 1 gram of hair. Hair contains far more carbon by weight than ash, which is why much less is needed. Larger carat sizes require proportionally more material — our team will confirm the exact quantity for the size you choose.
No. Only the portion needed to extract enough carbon for your chosen diamond size is used. Any unused material is respectfully handled, and excess material can be returned on request.
Hair is an excellent alternative — only about 1 gram is required per carat. In some cases the two can be combined. Please contact us to discuss your specific situation.
Approximately 2 to 3 months from the time we receive the carbon source to delivery of the finished, IGI-certified diamond. Larger sizes (2 carats and above) may take slightly longer due to the additional growth time required.
Trace elements that occur naturally in the remains can subtly influence the colour of the final crystal. This is part of what makes each memorial diamond truly one of a kind.
Every sample is assigned a unique traceability code on arrival, and that code follows the material through every laboratory step. Your finished diamond is delivered with documentation linking it back to the original sample, alongside the independent IGI report.
Absolutely. The finished memorial diamond can be set into a ring, pendant, necklace, or other custom design. We offer in-house jewellery design and can work to your preferences for metal, setting style, and any additional stones.
