How much hair is needed for a 1 carat diamond?
We need very little — and what we make from it lasts forever.
A lock of hair
- 1 gHair — about the size of a small lock. Hair is 45–50% carbon, more than enough to grow a 1-carat diamond. Cut on the day of the moment you want to preserve.
- 2 g+For pair diamonds — 1 gram from each partner. We grow two stones in parallel, each containing the carbon of one half of the bond.
- ↑Larger sizes need proportionally more material. Our team confirms the exact quantity for the size you choose.

How CVD technology turns hair carbon into a real diamond
Nothing here is artificial. We take the carbon that was already there and reveal the most perfect form it can take.
Carbon — the building block of every life
Every living being is built on carbon. Hair contains 45–50% carbon; bone ash, by comparison, contains only about 3–9%. That is why a single gram of hair is enough for a 1-carat stone, while ash-based diamonds need far more material.
Diamonds are simply the purest crystalline form of carbon. By isolating the carbon from a lock of hair and growing it into a crystal, we are not manufacturing an imitation — we are rearranging something that was already part of a life.
What Chemical Vapour Deposition (CVD) actually does
Inside a vacuum chamber, high-energy microwave plasma breaks apart carbon-rich gas molecules. The freed carbon atoms then settle — one atomic layer at a time — onto a diamond seed crystal, building a perfect lattice over weeks or months.
Unlike HPHT (High Pressure High Temperature) growth, CVD needs no metal catalyst, tends to produce fewer inclusions, and gives precise control over size and colour. That control is why we use it for every bond diamond.

From a lock of hair to pure carbon
Labelling & tracking
Your sample is assigned a unique identification code on arrival, giving full traceability through every later step.
Preparation
The hair is cleaned and milled to increase reaction surface area, so the chemical purification can work thoroughly.
Chemical purification
Minerals and non-carbon residues are removed, isolating the pure carbon component of the sample.
High-temperature treatment
The purified carbon is treated in oxygen-free conditions to prevent oxidation and maximise purity.
Vaporisation
The carbon is converted into gas form, ready to be fed into the CVD growth chamber.
Verification
Carbon yield is checked against the target carat weight before growth begins, so nothing is wasted.
Growing the diamond in the CVD reactor
Seed preparation
A high-purity diamond seed crystal is placed inside the vacuum chamber as the foundation of the lattice.
Carbon gas introduction
A precisely controlled mixture of carbon-rich gases is introduced at low pressure.
Plasma activation
High-energy microwave plasma breaks the gas molecules apart, releasing free carbon atoms.
Layer-by-layer growth
Carbon atoms settle onto the seed and arrange into a crystalline lattice, an atom-thick layer at a time.
Controlled duration
Growth continues for weeks to months, depending on the carat weight and specification you chose.
Post-growth treatment
The rough stone is cooled and extracted. A slight brownish tint at this stage is normal for CVD growth.
Cutting, polishing and quality control
Marking
Cutters read the rough stone's internal structure to identify the optimal cutting planes.
3D scanning
High-precision scanning maps the stone's internal composition in detail before a single cut is made.
Cut design
The design balances weight retention, optical performance, and the shape you have chosen.
Laser cutting
Laser cutting delivers micron-level precision without introducing stress fractures.
Hand polishing
Preliminary shaping is followed by hand-polishing to smooth every facet and bring out maximum fire.
Quality control
Final in-house grading against the 4Cs before the stone is submitted to IGI for independent certification.

Send your sample
Cut and send about 1 gram of hair (or 1 gram each, for a pair). We provide simple packaging on request and log every parcel with a traceability code on arrival.
Extract the carbon
Our laboratory purifies the carbon from your hair, isolating it from everything else, ready for the growth stage.
Grow the diamond
Inside the CVD reactor, carbon atoms are deposited layer by layer onto a seed crystal over several weeks to months.
Cut & polish
Master craftsmen shape the rough diamond to your chosen specification and hand-polish the stone for maximum brilliance.
Certification & delivery
The finished stone goes to IGI for independent certification, then to you with its full report and traceability documentation — set into jewellery, if you choose.
