A diamond certificate is only as reliable as the laboratory that issued it. Two diamonds with identical stated specifications — D colour, VVS2 clarity, Excellent cut — can carry very different levels of buyer protection depending on which lab graded them, whether a laser inscription links stone to paper, and whether that certificate is recognised by insurers and resellers outside the country of purchase.

The Core Question For lab-grown diamonds in particular, the choice of certification lab affects three things that matter beyond the moment of purchase: whether the stone can be insured, whether it can be resold or traded in, and whether a future buyer anywhere in the world can verify what they are receiving.

Today, IGI is the dominant certification body for lab-grown diamonds globally. The vast majority of lab-grown diamonds sold by reputable retailers — including MadisonDia — carry IGI certificates. This dominance is not accidental. IGI offers what lab-grown diamond buyers actually need: a full, specific 4Cs grading report using the same D-to-Z colour scale and FL-to-I3 clarity scale applied to natural diamonds, with no ambiguity or broad categorisation.

Why IGI Is the Right Choice for Lab-Grown Diamonds

The core reason is cost-appropriateness. Lab-grown diamond prices have fallen dramatically. A 1-carat D/VVS2 round brilliant lab-grown diamond that retailed for thousands of dollars in 2020 now retails for approximately USD 280–320 in 2026. At this price point, certification costs matter. IGI's fees for a lab-grown diamond report are a small fraction of the stone's value — meaning the certification adds protection without inflating the total cost of ownership.

IGI also includes laser inscription as a standard service on all certified lab-grown diamonds. The certificate number is inscribed on the girdle, permanently linking stone to report. This can be verified by anyone with a 10× loupe, and independently confirmed online at igi.org at no cost.

GIA and Lab-Grown Diamonds: A More Complicated Relationship

GIA's history with lab-grown diamonds has been cautious and at times contradictory. For years, GIA declined to issue full grading reports for lab-grown diamonds, issuing only basic identification reports. It eventually began offering lab-grown diamond reports with full 4Cs, but in October 2025, GIA changed course again — replacing specific 4Cs grading with a broader two-tier quality assessment system using the terms "Premium" and "Standard" rather than specific colour and clarity grades.

Important — GIA's Current Lab-Grown Policy (from October 2025) GIA's new "Laboratory-Grown Diamond Quality Assessment" classifies lab-grown diamonds as either "Premium" (D colour, minimum VVS clarity, Excellent cut) or "Standard" (E–J colour, VS clarity minimum). Specific grades like "D colour" or "VVS2 clarity" are no longer stated on GIA's lab-grown reports. This is a significant reduction in grading specificity compared to IGI's full 4Cs approach.

The Cost Problem for Lab-Grown Diamonds

Even before the 2025 format change, the economics of GIA certification for lab-grown diamonds were difficult to justify. GIA's previous full lab-grown diamond report cost USD 55–85 for a 1-carat stone. At a time when a top-specification 1-carat D/VVS2 lab-grown diamond retails for approximately USD 280–320, a certification fee of USD 55–85 represents 17–30% of the stone's total value. This made GIA certification economically irrational for most lab-grown diamonds.

GIA's new quality assessment is priced at USD 15 per carat — more appropriate, but at the cost of grading specificity. Buyers receive less information about the exact quality of their stone than an IGI report provides.

AGS (American Gem Society Laboratories) deserves mention because existing AGS certificates still circulate in the secondary market, and some buyers encounter them when purchasing pre-owned or estate jewellery.

AGS was founded in 1934 and was respected for one specific contribution: its 0–10 cut grading scale, which was notably more precise than the Excellent/Very Good/Good system used by other labs. An AGS "0" cut grade — its highest — became a benchmark for ideal-proportion round brilliant diamonds among performance-focused buyers.

Key Fact — AGS No Longer Exists as an Independent Lab AGS merged with GIA in 2023 and ceased issuing new certificates. If you are buying a new diamond today, you will not receive an AGS certificate. If you encounter an existing AGS certificate, it remains valid as a historical record of that stone's original grading — but the lab that issued it no longer operates and cannot be contacted for verification.

AGS never issued certificates for lab-grown diamonds. Its closure means AGS is not a relevant consideration for any new lab-grown diamond purchase.

CGL — The Japanese Standard

CGL (中央宝石研究所 — Central Gem Laboratory) was founded in Tokyo in 1970 and is Japan's largest and most respected gemological laboratory. It is a member of LMHC (Laboratory Manual Harmonisation Committee), the international body that includes GIA, and is considered Japan's equivalent of a premier grading institution. Approximately 60–70% of diamond grading reports issued in the Japanese domestic market come from CGL.

For buyers purchasing a natural diamond for use within Japan, and intending to keep it there, CGL is a legitimate and well-regarded certification option. Japanese insurance companies and domestic resellers widely accept CGL grading reports.

The Critical Limitations — What Retailers in Japan Often Don't Tell You

Despite its domestic standing, CGL has three significant limitations that every buyer should understand before choosing a CGL-certified diamond over an IGI or GIA-certified one.

1. Laser inscription is not standard. Unlike IGI and GIA, CGL does not automatically inscribe the certificate number on the diamond's girdle. Laser inscription is available from CGL as a separate, optional add-on service. This means the majority of CGL-certified diamonds in the market have no permanent physical link between stone and certificate. Without that inscription, you cannot independently verify — at any point in the future — that your diamond is the specific stone its certificate describes.

2. Recognition outside Japan is very limited. A CGL certificate carries essentially no recognition in Hong Kong, Singapore, the United States, Europe, or any other major jewellery market outside Japan. Diamond is a global commodity. If you ever need to insure your diamond internationally, trade it in outside Japan, sell it to a buyer abroad, or have it assessed by a jeweller in another country, a CGL certificate will not be accepted as primary certification. The buyer or insurer will require independent re-grading.

3. Lab-grown diamond coverage is limited. CGL's primary focus and reputation is built on natural diamond grading. Its certification of lab-grown diamonds is limited, and CGL reports for lab-grown stones carry even less international recognition than its natural diamond reports.

⚠ The Resale Reality If you are buying a lab-grown diamond with any possibility of future resale, trade-in, or international insurance, a CGL certificate offers very limited protection. Diamonds are a global commodity. A certificate recognised only in one country effectively has no value the moment the stone crosses a border. CGL is a genuine, professional, and respected laboratory within Japan. The criticism here is not of CGL's grading quality — it is of the practical limitations that apply when a diamond leaves the domestic Japanese market, or when a buyer needs to verify stone identity without specialist equipment. For those reasons, for lab-grown diamonds in particular, IGI is the more appropriate choice even for buyers based in Japan.
