CGL (中央宝石研究所 — Central Gem Laboratory) was founded in Tokyo in 1970 and is Japan's largest and most respected gemological laboratory. It is a member of LMHC (Laboratory Manual Harmonisation Committee), the international body that includes GIA, and is considered Japan's equivalent of a premier grading institution. Approximately 60–70% of diamond grading reports issued in the Japanese domestic market come from CGL.
For buyers purchasing a natural diamond for use within Japan, and intending to keep it there, CGL is a legitimate and well-regarded certification option. Japanese insurance companies and domestic resellers widely accept CGL grading reports.
The Critical Limitations — What Retailers in Japan Often Don't Tell You
Despite its domestic standing, CGL has three significant limitations that every buyer should understand before choosing a CGL-certified diamond over an IGI or GIA-certified one.
1. Laser inscription is not standard. Unlike IGI and GIA, CGL does not automatically inscribe the certificate number on the diamond's girdle. Laser inscription is available from CGL as a separate, optional add-on service.
